If Another Jesus Showed Up They'd Murder Him Again

It wouldn't be Romans and Jews who killed him this time. It'd be the government and certain fundamentalist Christians.

There is an old saying, "Never discuss religion and politics." After all, those are the things that got him killed in the first place.

Think of all those religious frauds on TV begging for your money. If their millions of dollars evaporated what would they do? I doubt they would kill him but like the Pharisees of Jesus' time, claim he was in league with the devil. What would some of their unstable, crazed followers do?

Imagine if a man showed up who could heal the sick and raise the dead. "He does that because he's in cahoots with the Devil!" Even today, some of the lunatics would claim it. That's what they did in the first place.

I don't think the government wouldn't be too pleased either, because of his threat to its power. They'd try something and it would not be pleasant.

In order to understand the present and future, look to history. Human nature doesn't change.

The "Left Behind" nuts expect a war-like Jesus coming back with blood and iron. For that matter, that's why the Jews rejected him in the first place. Now it'll be Christians' turn to reject and murder him.

If another man such as Jesus showed up, the only way he would not be killed is to stay away from religion and politics. About the only way he could do that is to claim his powers were "scientific." Science didn't exist 2000 years ago.

I suspect the "I Fucking Love Science" pinheads would claim some sort of fraud was going on, but they're insignificant anyway. It's only the people with the power who would be threatened by him.

Two thousand years ago about the only way to get around was with a donkey. Today we have jet airplanes and a world-wide media. People throughout the world would know of a man who could heal the sick and raise the dead. There'd be a lot more people looking to kill such a man.

Even if the original Jesus really did return and came flying down out of the sky proclaiming peace and love many would not accept him and claim he was the anti-Christ and try to kill him again! Peace and love - what the hell? We want blood and iron and death and destruction - it can't really be him, just some satanic impostor!

People with wealth and political power - and the religious fanatics - are always threatened by someone who can upset their apple cart. They're not interested in the truth, only their hallucinations. They'll even murder what they consider a threat if they can get away with it.

Why people think the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is really the Messiah is beyond me. But it doesn't say much about people, does it?

"Imagine if a man showed up who could heal the sick..."

He would have the AMA on his butt incredibly fast, and they would be screaming to have him imprisoned for something like 'practicing medicine without a license'. There's nothing that trade unionists hate more than some talented non-member 'poaching on their turf'.

There was a 1980 made-for-TV movie called "Resurrection", which explores the very things that you are describing. A young woman who survives a deadly car crash which kills her husband, barely survives -- but when she recovers, she finds that she has acquired a psychic healing gift. Although she freely and generously heals those who want her to heal them, she becomes the target of Christian fundamentalists and unbalanced religious extremists.

An Old Testament prophet would be kept in a mental asylum (or its PC-named equivalent), drugged and straight-jacketed.

Oh pish tosh!

Returning messiahs are the LAST of the gubbermints' concern - or rather, the real power brokers pulling their strings.

If ANYONE shows up that threatens their interests they are usually disposed of by simple mudslinging. If they are strong enough to prevail against that - they're bought off. If they are incorruptible - "the lone crazy acting alone dontchya know" gets them a la JFK. Any loose ends are need to be cut, they are - a la Lee Harvey Oswald.

Challenge The Machine at your peril.

Doesn't "Stranger in a Strange Land" cover a lot of this ground? Been a while since I read it.

I blame some of this on the old "sinners in the hands of an angry god" idea. Really, that's more akin to Zeus than Yahweh or Jesus.

sometimes I wonder if the modern Christian realizes that he's doing more black magic in the service to the Sun God than anything to Jesus or Yahweh. the very people Jesus condemned in his day, coincidentally the only people he condemned, well, modern church folk remind me of them a lot. they'd rather sit around and chant love songs to their Jesus-turned-boyfriend/girlfriend set to the tune of pretty music that they called worship, and feel good about themselves, and convince themselves that what is, is not. And that's magic. they might as well put on their druid costumes and pay the ghost.

the only sword Jesus brought was the one to sever the ties to all of the religious machinations that the modern Christian insists on enslaving themselves in.

the modern American Christian Church especially has been riding that white horse called war for a long time. So no, Bob, they wouldn't have a clue.
